The Barbie movie debuted on July 21, 2023, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken. You may be asking yourself, “What is the Barbie movie?” I’m here to answer that. Another question you could be asking is, “Why did they make a movie about Barbie?” Well, why not? There is already a Barbie show for younger kids, so why can’t there be one for older kids and adults? And let me say one thing, if you’re the type of person that likes feminism, comedy, and pink then you’re in for a real sweet treat.
My sister desperately wanted to see the movie the second she saw that they were making one. I didn’t, but I decided to give it a chance. When we left the movie theater, I was wondering why I didn’t want to see it in the first place. The Barbie movie was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen! The story line was impeccable. It’s not a movie for smaller kids to say the least but, it wasn’t inappropriate. The Barbie movie is made more for people who played with Barbies in the 1960s through 1990s . There are a few adult jokes, but then again, it is rated PG 13 for a reason.
My grandmother came to the movie with me, my mom, and my sister. My grandma was part of the first generation to play with the Barbie doll which was released on March 9th 1959. She thought that the beginning of the movie was hilarious. There were young girls playing with toys that revolved around motherhood and about being a housewife. Then Barbie comes into the scene and they start destroying their toys that they were playing with previously.
All of the Barbie’s and Kens live in a place called Barbie land, which is separate from the real world. The main idea of the movie was that “Stereotypical Barbie ” wasn’t stereotypical anymore. She stopped walking on her pointed feet and had cellulite. As a result, she had to go see Weird Barbie, played by Kate McKinnon, who was “played with too hard” and has marker all over her face, and a choppy hair cut. Weird Barbie tells Stereotypical Barbie that the little girl who was playing with her, wasn’t playing with her anymore, and if she wanted to get back to normal, then she would have to find her.
